A Memorial Space with Ramp of Infinity

With the concern of the shortage of land resource, our team optimized the form of the cemetery as we designed a new one called “Infinity Shrine”. The Shrine can be merged into every neighborhood environment while people’s gravestones are substituted by “soul fire”. Every decedents’ “soul fire” from the same region will be placed in the same Shrine since every dead is equal and deserves the same respect. We believe the samsara of life is like the repetition and infinity represented by the Mobius strip. In the Shrine, therefore, is a ramp which goes down first and then comes back with a rising slope, and the destination of the ramp is also the starting point of it. In this way, the ramp concretizes the process of samsara from the decline of life to rebirth. Descendants will step on the ramp after entering the Shrine and be surrounded by the “soul fire”; the dim light inside will bring them the brand-new serene memorial experience. In the whole site, we invite water element at a large scale to either reflect the light from “soul fire” inside or the sky and clouds outside. They bring people a peaceful phenomenon to think, recall, and commemorate.
In a team of three, I composed the design concept, and we together produced the digital model, technical and functional drawings, and renderings.
